Rear Suspension Removal

After getting the car on jack stands, remove the rear tires. Of course you will want to loosen the lug nuts before raising the vehicle, unless you have an impact wrench like I do.

Remove the spare tire carrier using a 19mm wrench

Use a floor jack to support the tire and carrier, lower slowly so nothing gets damaged.

Use a 1/2″ wrench to loosen the carrier support arms.

With the spare lowered you can now remove the tire and the support arms.

With the spare and carrier out of the way it’s probably best to remove the top as well. You will have to drill out the 2 aluminum rivets to do this.

Loosen the spring bolts by putting a floor jack under the spring to remove the tension, once the bolts are offslowly lower the jack. The bolts are 13/16 top and 7/8 bottom. See the picture to the right(2) for jacking location.

There is a heat shield protecting the spring, the removal is a simple 2 screw operation. Screws are located at the bottom of the heat shield.

With the bolts removed this is how much the spring will lower, it would probably be easiest to remove the bolts completely then lower the jack.

Shocks are easy to remove, the top mount bolts are 5/8 outer & 11/16 inner, and the bottom is a 19mm.

To remove the lower shock mounts, use a metal punch and hammer as they may be stuck in. Be careful not to damage the threads or get a shock mount removal tool for about $12.

This is what you will have once the spring components are removed. Next item to remove is the struts and mount.
